PACS Desktop Viewer

The Desktop Viewer

The PACS viewer is an application that displays diagnostic quality medical images for review by radiologists, clinicians and other healthcare personnel. Access to the data generated during an imaging procedure requires a validated user session. The information in this section provides instructions for setting up your workstation for the PACS and initiating a user session. The instructions that follow assume you have access to a workstation that satisfies the minimum required configuration.

Once a session is opened on the viewer, you will see the basic viewer components which are found on all versions of the PACS. They consist of the main screen workspace, which contains the area for displaying images, the menu bar, the docked tool groups, the thumbnail panel and the status bar. Moving the arrow over the icons and menus will have a dropdown detailing what the icon description. Right clicking anywhere on the screen will also pull up a dropdown tool group that can be customized. You may add or modify dropdown menus and icons on the tool groups. There are also many keyboard shortcuts in the default Desktop Viewer.

Displayed images will appear on the screen in frames. You can change the characteristics of the display area, and specify how much of the window you want an image to occupy. You can stack images, tile them, increase and decrease image size, flip, rotate and invert images, change the window width and center, invert the gray scale slope, run a cine loop for a set of images, magnify images, change image attributes, and more.
