Viewer activity and crash logs

The viewer can log all user actions to a log file. This provides support with information needed to respond to inquiries about behavior and support calls. Additionally, in the event of a viewer crash, the viewer collects the crash dump for investigation and uploads the two most recent activity logs and crash information files to the server. This happens immediately after restarting the viewer following a crash. Activity log files and crash dump files are stored on the server in ~/var/log/viewerinfo.log.  This log file is rotated out and purged after one week.

Log files are appended with .sent after being uploaded to the server. Be aware that the viewer will take longer to load the first time after a crash because some of these logs may be large, or the network upload speed may be slow.  Log files are purged when they are four days old.

By default, all viewers are configured to capture the crash information. Since activity logging negatively impacts the viewer’s performance, it is disabled by default. You can enable and disable both of these settings under Settings/Customize Settings. The Create Log Files checkbox controls the creation of the activity logs. The Create Crash Dump checkbox controls the creation of the crash information log. The logs are stored in c:\Program Files\PracticeBuilder\PBLogFiles.
